First of all, I want to dedicate this post to my dad because it is Father's Day and my dad did so much to help me. Today we are going to be talking about the moon. I think the moon is a place for the Easter Bunny because if you were on the moon, you would bounce up and down because of the low gravity levels. The moon is the only body in space that humans have visited other than Earth. The moon is about 238,900 miles from Earth and it is the brightest object in the night sky. It was this man named Neil Armstrong who was the first to step on the moon. He said "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". He was in a crew with 2 other people named Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins. Did you know that the moon has no atmosphere? Scientists think that the moon formed when a planet like Mars crashed into the Earth and the debris formed into a round shape of what we call "Moon". Have you ever wondered why the moon looks different each night? It is because of the direction the light from the sun is hitting it. So if there is a half moon, don't think that it is a moon cut in half. This is called a phase. There are 8 phases of the moon. There are some days where you can't see the moon at all or you can see just part of it. Here is a photo of the moon's phases.
So remember, if you go to the Moon and you are a VERY jumpy person, be careful, because soon, you'll be flying through the air like Superman! (Or should I say you'll be flying through
space like Superman!) :-)
Stay tuned for Mars, coming out on June 19, 2014 on
