Saturn

Here comes the ringed planet: Saturn!!!! Saturn may be the most beautiful planet in the solar system because of the rings around it, but actually, here is the truth: those rings around that planet are made from rocks, ice and bits of chemicals that are in your pencil. It's crazy, right? So, Saturn is the 6th planet from the solar system and is the 2nd "gassy" planet in the solar system. Saturn has 53 known moons and 9 provisional moons. One of the most famous moons of Saturn is Titan. Titan is famous for its size compared to the rest of the moons. Saturn is about 890,700,000 miles away from the Sun and it is visible to the human eye as a little smudge. There have been spacecraft going past Saturn but most notably a spacecraft named Voyager 2 passed Saturn. It has also passed Uranus and Neptune and is still going out there to explore the further reaches of space. Here is a picture of Saturn:

The rings may be made of rocks, ice, and other chemicals, but from outer space, it may be called the most beautiful planet of the solar system.

Jupiter

AND NOW PRESENTING THE SOLAR SYSTEM'S MOST BIGGEST PLANET: JUPITER!!!!!!!! Did you know that Jupiter can fit about 1300 Earths inside it? Jupiter is the first planet made out of gas in the solar system. Jupiter's atmosphere is made of 90% hydrogen, 10% helium. Jupiter has 67 moons. The four biggest moons are Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa. Scientists think that Europa might have life on it because Europa is completely covered in ice. Underneath that ice there is an ocean, which may have microbes living in it, similar to those in Earth's waters. Jupiter also has a Great Red Spot, which looks like a spot from outer space, but actually, it is a really, REALLY, REALLY, big storm that goes on forever.
Here is a picture of the Great Red Spot:

This spot is so big that about 3 and a half earths can fit in it. Since the planet is so huge, there is a lot of gravitational pull, so if you weigh 50 pounds on Earth, you would weigh 117 pounds on Jupiter. Jupiter is about 483,800,000 miles from the sun. Jupiter is the 5th planet and is the first gas planet in the universe. And finally, Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. So remember, if you complain that you can't carry heavy weights, be lucky to be on Earth than Jupiter, because then, they would be a lot heavier!!!! :-)

Mars

Have you ever wondered why they call Mars "The Red Planet" ? Or what makes it so red? All these questions will be answered in today's post. Today I am going to be telling you about the planet Mars. Mars is a planet smaller than Earth and Venus, but it is bigger than Mercury and the Moon. Mars is called the red planet because it is completely covered in red soil. The red planet has very rich amounts of iron. This is what makes Mars red. Mars is a planet that has two moons named Deimos and Phobos. Scientists think that these two moons came from asteroids that got pulled into the orbit of Mars because of their jagged shape. Here is a picture of Deimos:

Here is a picture of Phobos:

Scientists think that there may have been water on Mars. They are currently sending spacecraft and rovers to investigate the soil and do some experiments. A recent rover that NASA sent down there is named Curiosity. Curiosity took some pictures and had a laser that broke down rocks. Curiosity launched from Earth on November 26, 2011, at 10:02 eastern time. Curiosity reached Mars on August 6, 2012. Curiosity is currently exploring Mars surface and sending pictures and information. Here is a picture that Curiosity took:

The distance from the Sun to Mars is 141,600,000 miles. Mars is the fourth and last rocky planet. So remember, if you really hate red, don't go to the planet Mars, because the whole planet is covered in red! :-)

Moon

First of all, I want to dedicate this post to my dad because it is Father's Day and my dad did so much to help me. Today we are going to be talking about the moon. I think the moon is a place for the Easter Bunny because if you were on the moon, you would bounce up and down because of the low gravity levels. The moon is the only body in space that humans have visited other than Earth. The moon is about 238,900 miles from Earth and it is the brightest object in the night sky. It was this man named Neil Armstrong who was the first to step on the moon. He said "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". He was in a crew with 2 other people named Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins. Did you know that the moon has no atmosphere? Scientists think that the moon formed when a planet like Mars crashed into the Earth and the debris formed into a round shape of what we call "Moon". Have you ever wondered why the moon looks different each night? It is because of the direction the light from the sun is hitting it. So if there is a half moon, don't think that it is a moon cut in half. This is called a phase. There are 8 phases of the moon. There are some days where you can't see the moon at all or you can see just part of it. Here is a photo of the moon's phases.

So remember, if you go to the Moon and you are a VERY jumpy person, be careful, because soon, you'll be flying through the air like Superman! (Or should I say you'll be flying through space like Superman!)    :-)

Earth

Ahh, Earth, our precious earth. Did you know that our planet is the only planet that life can live on? Earth is a mighty special planet because it is the only planet that has water in it. Earth is approximately 93 million miles away from the sun. It is the perfect distance because if we were closer, the temperature would rise up, and if we were farther, the temperature would be too cold. Earth has one moon. Did you know that meteors burn up in the atmosphere because the atmosphere and the meteor are creating so much friction that it burns up. Ever wondered why we have seasons? It's because the Earth is on a tilt and is always on that tilt so when it revolves around the sun, different
sides of the earth hit the sun and others turn away from the sun and this cycle changes so that's how seasons come and go. In the picture below, when the northern hemisphere is closer to the sun, it is summer, and when it's farther, it's winter. Autumn and spring are when it's in the middle.

So remember, don't EVER underestimate the power of Earth, because it is the only planet you can live on.

Venus

First, I wanted to say "Happy Memorial Day" to everyone. Next, I want to say sorry for the absence. Today, whew, it's hot today, we will be talking about Venus, the hottest planet in the solar system. Did you know that the temperature can rack up to more than 864 degrees Fahrenheit? Why does this happen? It is because of the thick atmosphere that traps the heat, so, unlike Mercury, the heat stays for the day and night. Venus is 67,240,000 miles away from the sun and is the 2nd planet away from the sun. Venus, like Mercury, has no moons and it also has a jagged surface filled with valleys, hills, and mountains. The atmosphere is made of sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide. Venus is often called the sister of Earth because they are almost the same size. So remember, if you think it's a hot day today, you're lucky because you're not living on Venus! :-)
