Mercury

Last post, we were talking about the solar system. Now we will talk about each planet individually. We'll first start with Mercury. Let me first tell you that Mercury is not a nice place to live. The year is only 88 days. The temperature is very unstable too. In the day the temperature is 800 degrees and at night, the temperature is -240 degrees. This is because of the thin atmosphere that can't block the heat in the day and trap the heat in the night. The distance between the sun and Mercury is about 36,000,000 miles. It looks a bit like the moon because it has craters and it is gray. Mercury, like Earth, is a rocky planet. So remember, Mercury is the first planet in the solar system and you would not want to live on it.

The Sun

Ah, the sun. I love waking up to it. It's so beautiful if you watch it set. Oops, off track :-). So the sun is really important and vital to us humans. Without it, there would be no day. The sun is the hub of the solar system and all the planets (mentioned in the earlier post) orbit around it. To orbit means to revolve. The sun is so big that about 1.3 million earths could fit inside it. The sun is also really hot. The temperature is about 9941 degrees Fahrenheit. Sometimes a special event occurs and the moon actually covers up the sun in the day. This is called a solar eclipse. Have you wondered why the moon looks like it's glowing? It's because the sun's light is reflected of the moon. The sun gives us light and heat and without it,

  1. It would be night every day.
  2. You'd be freezing.
We would probably also drift away from the galaxy. So the next time you wake up seeing the morning sun, you've got somebody, or more, something to thank.

The Solar System

I know many people know about the solar system and when I first learned about the solar system, I thought there were 8 planets and that's it but it turns out that's not true, I mean, literally. I really liked the solar system and was very interested in it and I thought I will start with this. The solar system is the system of planets that revolve around the Sun. There are 8 planets and 5 dwarf planets in the solar system. The 8 planets are:

  1. Mercury
  2. Venus
  3. Earth
  4. Mars
  5. Jupiter
  6. Saturn
  7. Uranus
  8. Neptune
(Note that order is closest to the sun to farthest)
There is also an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. An asteroid is a piece of rock or debris floating in space. The asteroid belt is a clump of asteroids together orbiting the sun. The first four planets closest to the sun are called "rocky" planets as they are made of rock and the last four planets are called "gassy" planets because they are made entirely from gases.
The 2 dwarf planets are called Ceres and Pluto. Ceres is near the asteroid belt. It was once considered an asteroid but Ceres was too big to be an asteroid and too small to be a planet. Pluto is really far from the sun as it is even further than Neptune. Pluto was once a planet, but it was too small to be a planet so it is a dwarf planet.

Here is a list of the dwarf planets:

1. Pluto
2. Ceres
3. Haumea
4. Makemake
5. Eris

Intro to Anish's blog about space ... and maybe science.

Hello, everyone. my name is Anish Sikhinam and this is a blog about space. This is supposed to be a informative blog and you should probably learn something from this. I will start writing paragraphs and post it in the blog.
I first got interested in space when I started reading about the solar system at the age of 7. It was very interesting so I read on. I loved how everything connected to each other and said "I'm going to be an astronaut when I grow up."
Last fall when we visited Florida we went to NASA and Cape Canaveral. It was so exciting and since then my interest in space science has increased more. I've always wanted to share information of what I've learned and I found that a blog is a great way to share information, so I'm going to give it a try J
(If you're using an Apple device, the smiley face might look like a J or a box)
